China renews Google`s internet licence
The Chinese government has renewed Google's licence to operate in the world's largest internet market, appearing to accept a compromise offered by the US search engine over internet censorship.
Beijing had threatened to close Google's access to the country and withold a licence from operating in the country after the US group said it would no longer be willing to censor its search results.
Google initially redirected all its traffic from China to a Hong Kong based site, which was outside the reach of censors. However, Beijing made it clear that such a move was unacceptable.
Two weeks ago, Google offered a further compromise by stopping the automatic redirect and creating a static "landing page" for Chinese users, where they are offered the option of clicking on a link to the uncensored Hong Kong site.
Despite initial industry scepticism that one extra click would satisfy Beijing, Chinese officials appear to have approved the arrangement, allowing Google to continue to operate in the country.
Wang Chen, head of China's Information Office of the State Council, told reporters in June: "We've long said that to develop in China, you must abide by Chinese laws."
But Chinese officials could still block access to the Hong Kong website, but have yet to do so. While there have been some problems accessing parts of the Google.hk site from China recently, but it has mostly remained visible to users in the country.
